FASTING, THE BEST DETOX TREATMENT
Fasting consists in abstaining from all types of caloric foods and drinks for a period of time, with the aim of obtaining a general disintoxication of the body. It is as they say, the “detox treatment” par excellence. You may drink natural water or natural fizzy water, even better if from a mountain spring, but not more than a litre and a half daily, in order not to unnecessarily stress the heart and kidneys. Herbal infusions and vegetable broth are allowed, but not fruit juice and milk, which are caloric.
SHORT FASTS ARE BETTER
Nowadays the human body is so weakened by a hyper-civilized life, that it can no longer bear long fasts – 40 days or more – the way the great personages of the past did, like Moses, Jesus Christ, Mohammed, Buddha, Hippocrates, and Plato. But even a much shorter fasting period, eventually repeated now and then, can generally boost one’s health. However, if you intend to do it alone, it should not in any case exceed more than three consecutive days.
FASTING: THE TOTAL REST TREATMENT
For the entire duration of the fast, it would be advisable to rest, mostly at home, but not always lying down: you may do small, peaceful jobs or hobbies. But it would be good to take two short walks during the day in open air, to activate circulation and purify your lungs. In short, it would be the real chance to take a break and have total rest. However, you must prepare yourself to peacefully support the inevitable detox crisis, that is, small discomforts (headache, exhaustion, back pain, moodiness) that reach their peak in the second and third day, but last only a few hours and are not serious.
AND AFTER THE FAST?
The first day after the fast, one never feels that gnawing hunger as one would expect, but rather, you may even feel like eating very little, because the digestive system will have almost gotten used to finally taking a rest. And what you should precisely do is to eat less, perhaps spreading out the daily rations in three or four small meals. On the second day, your appetite will increase, but do not exaggerate with the amounts. And already on the third day, you may eat till you are full, but be careful to guide your instincts in the choice of foods. One of the great benefits of fasting is in fact, a refining of the sensitivity of one’s instinct, which is seen particularly in the choice of foods, especially when one has eaten them for several days in a row: you can be sure that if a food continues to be enjoyable after various days, it will do good to your health, and if you don’t like it, it will not do you good. In short, our palate becomes the best laboratory for the analysis of foods!
All the health benefits of fasting will not be seen on the first day, but on an average, a week after it has ended, and may extend even for months. Only then will we really understand why the important personages of history practiced fasting and recommended it!
THE HELPFUL METHODS OF FASTING AND ITS IDEAL DURATION
If you are being helped by a dietary specialist, you may suitably extend the fast, but with the help of special, personalized techniques, such as abdominal massages, some breathing and relaxation exercises, and drinking depurating sulphated waters, all practices that support in the ideal manner the detoxifying action of this marvellous method. The specialized expert will furthermore know how to determine the optimal duration of the fast for each person. Keep in mind though, that fasting is not, and must not be considered a performance competition: in other words it would be totally wrong to think that “the longer it is, the better it is for our health.” Instead, the first secret of fasting lies in its right dosage!

Then always remember that fasting is not a “remedy,” or a simple “therapy,” but it is a mindset, a lifestyle philosophy to be acquired. In effect, to fully exploit its enormous regenerating potential, it is indispensable not to consider it as a remedy on par with a medical treatment or a surgical intervention, but rather, as a very powerful means to reeducate the body and the spirit. It is the true means that will help us lead a healthy and happy life.
