Osteoporosis appears often during menopause, but also in other moments of life. Menopause – in itself a totally physiological event – cannot, however, be the main cause of osteoporosis, but rather a trigger. The true cause of such an impairing disease is nothing else but the lack of calcium which is a bone constituent. But how does this gradual lack of calcium come about? Surely this happens when one has habitually consumed refined sugar for many years.


Under the quantitative aspect, refined sugar is one of the main elements most present in our pantries. Refined sugar is by far the most harmful to our health not so much due to what it contains, but especially because of what it does not contain. In fact, from a chemical point of view, it is nothing else but pure saccharose: there is no longer any trace of the 100 precious substances – like carbohydrates, vitamins, mineral salts, oligo elements, enzymes, aromas – that were contained in the vegetables they were extracted from, mainly beetroot and sugar cane. They have all been eliminated to isolate the sweetest and most pleasant component to the palate, and this is precisely saccharose.

Our body, however, absolutely needs those hundred substances, some of which constitute various enzymes that regulate the metabolism: calcium, for example, is an important constituent of these enzymes that are absolutely indispensable for life. So if the habitual consumption of sugar has been ongoing for many years, the lack of calcium becomes so conspicuous that to continue synthesizing the enzymes, the body is forced to withdraw it from the most abundant storage of calcium in our body, the bones. There is thus the onset of the progressive destruction of bone tissue, which is precisely osteoporosis.


Bone damage provoked by sugar certainly does not come about when we consume small amounts, but when we eat – often without our realizing it – tens and tens of grams daily. If we limit it to just one or two teaspoons a day in coffee, the damage would be almost nil. Just think, however, of the enormous quantity of sugar added on by the food industry, and also in home cuisine, or  in the myriads of foods: biscuits, cakes, flatbreads, tarts, brioches, croissants, candies, chocolate, snacks, melba toasts, jams, ice-creams, fruit juices, fruit in heavy syrup, white yoghurts added with sweet preparations, readymade sauces, various beverages for wide consumption, wines and sweet liquors….. and the list may go on and on. To give us an idea of the enormous amount of sugar we consume on the average, just count the aisles of a supermarket dedicated to the aforesaid foods or drinks, and compare them to all the aisles of the food sector: are we closer to 20% or 30%? Assuming by defect that nowadays even only 10% of the calories an average western eats is made up of refined sugar, couldn’t this explain the continuous rise over the last decades, not only of osteoporosis, but of various other bone degenerations such as dental tooth decay or fragility of the bone (proneness to fractures following minimum trauma)?


So what can we do to prevent and possibly heal osteoporosis? Firstly, by eating less refined sugar! Always check the ingredients of every packed food product: if you see “sugar” or “saccharose” or even “fructose” or “cane sugar,” do not buy that product. In fact, fructose is also a pure chemical substance and cane sugar is sadly so deprived of the essential elements for life, to be able to be considered harmless to our health. Obviously those who love sweets may eat them – and with all the benefits to their health – with natural foods that also contain saccharose or glucose besides the other aforesaid hundred substances, such as honey and sweet fruits (pineapple, grapes, peaches,), organic ones of course!
